Almelo General Cemetery

At Almelo General cemetery are some graves of soldiers who where killed in action,
during the war nearby or in the city of Almelo.

The town of Almelo is 23 kilometres north-west of Enschede, on the main road to Zwolle.
The cemetery is 2 kilometres west of the town in Willem de Clercqstraat, next to the crematorium.
From the entrance, follow the centre path, then the left hand path uphill before the pond.
The Commonwealth war graves are 100 metres along here on the right.

Also take a look at my News section for a brief story of one of the victims.

These graves are from the crew of a Lancaster bomber who crashed down,
on a school in the Hofkampstraat in Almelo.
The Lancaster MK III P for Peter with registration number ME 732,
and on the nose the text "I Go - I Come Back" was stationed at Skellingthorpe Airbase.
This Night Saturday Sept 23rd 1944, 91 Lancaster's of which 36 from Skellingthorpe,
will do a raid on the Dortmund - Emscanal the "Lanc's" from Skellingthorpe belong to,
61st Squadron No 5 Group the targets are some vital bridges and railway's.
Two men of the crew survived the crash by bailing out the rest of the crew is buried here,
Note that 4 headstones are closer together then normally is the case.
The remains of these 3 airmen and a civilian could not be identified the remains are buried there,
in one grave.

22 of the 91 Lancaster's did not return to their base..................

Only one Canadian soldier is buried here.
Strange is that Private F.J. Larrett of The Perth Regiment,
was killed in action in Appingedam (Groningen) 150 km from Almelo
and was buried there in a field grave.
In 1945 he was buried in Almelo,.........................why Almelo and not,
The Canadian War Cemetery in Holten ??

Commonwealth forces suffered some casualties when the Netherlands fell to the Germans
on 14 May 1940 and many more when the Allies returned between September 1944 and April 1945.
In the intervening years, many airmen were shot down or crashed in raids,
on strategic objectives in the Netherlands, or while returning from missions over Germany.
They now lie buried in cemeteries and churchyards all over the country.
Almelo General Cemetery contains 18 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
